Losing weight is easy, right? Just a matter of burning more calories than we eat.
While that principle holds true, anyone who has tried to lose weight knows that it’s not easy. It requires time, dedication, sustained motivation and the ability to resist temptation.
Many experts will tell you to set a specific outcome goal or product – how much weight you want to lose. I disagree.
Setting a product goal sets you up for frustration and a feeling of failure if you don’t achieve your goal. Instead, I suggest setting a process goal that simply says, “This is what I will do today.”
It might be 30 minutes of exercise or eating a salad instead of a hamburger and fries for lunch. The important thing is that the focus of the goal is on the process (just do it), not the product (weight loss). And one thing we know is also true about weight loss – if you do the process, the product will follow.
Of course, it only works if you do the process over and over. That’s why weight loss requires patience. There’s little point in checking the bathroom scale on a daily basis to see how much weight you’ve lost.
Remember, it probably took you years to put on the extra weight. Don’t expect to take it all off in two months.
Having said that, what you should see in two months of regular exercise and healthy eating is some weight loss, more energy and a positive attitude.
That positive attitude is the key to your future success. It’s also why I believe weight loss is in your mind.
